{"id":2516,"date":"2021-04-25T15:54:33","date_gmt":"2021-04-25T20:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/?page_id=2516"},"modified":"2021-04-25T15:54:33","modified_gmt":"2021-04-25T20:54:33","slug":"mgo-instrumentation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/mgo\/mgo-instrumentation\/","title":{"rendered":"MGO Instrumentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MGO employs three main techniques used in space geodesy research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/mgo-instrumentation\/sgslr\/\">Space Geodesy Satellite Laser Ranging (SGSLR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/mgo-instrumentation\/gnss-gps-stations\/\">Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)<\/a>, including the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), the European Galileo System, Chinese Beidou system (BDS), and the Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/mgo-instrumentation\/vlbi\/\">Geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (Geodetic VLBI)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To meet requirements for characterizing the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) at 1 mm accuracy and 0.1 mm\/year stability, these colocated systems are \u201ctied\u201d together through (a) a precise initial site survey and (b) several ongoing local motion monitoring techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why multi-technique core sites?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>VLBI orients the TRF to the celestial sources (quasars) and constrains the scale of the TRF.<\/li>\n<li>SLR provides absolute scale and connects the TRF to the center of mass of the Earth System.<\/li>\n<li>GNSS provides spatio-temporal densification and dissemination of the TRF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/research\/superconducting-gravimeter\/\">Gravity measurements<\/a> are added to integrate geometry and dynamics \u2013 Geoid-based height systems are the basis for US National Spatial Reference System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research is being carried out by the University of Texas at Austin to help reduce the km-scale network of instruments to mm-precision (virtual) fiducial point.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/research\/celestial-sources-through-gnss-signal-chain\/\">Signal propagation<\/a> and environmental effects \u2013 measurement and modeling<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csr.utexas.edu\/mgo\/research\/mm-metrology\/\">Inter-technique ties<\/a>, needed for synthesis<\/li>\n<li>Instrument system characterization (bias, drift, etc)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><em>Last Updated: April 9, 2021<\/em><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MGO employs three main techniques used in space geodesy research: Space Geodesy Satellite Laser Ranging (SGSLR) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), including the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), the Russian [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":2481,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2516"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2516"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2516\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2518,"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2516\/revisions\/2518"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2481"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/utw10640.utweb.utexas.edu\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2516"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
